Reporting to the Director of Patient Care, Oncology and Palliative Care, you will provide leadership in clinical, educational, and research activities, while leading strategic and transformational change through the implementation of new technology, and improvement of clinical processes, and by ensuring program quality. As Head of Medical Physics, you will supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the Clinical Medical Physics Service for the Radiation Medicine Program at the Walker Family Cancer Centre (WFCC) through the application of physics to medicine. This role will involve working collaboratively with the Head of Radiation Oncology and the Manager of Radiation Therapy to provide optimal clinical workflow efficiency, as well as high-quality, safe patient-centred care.

As Head of Medical Physics, you will provide oversight for quality assurance testing, commissioning and calibration of equipment used in the Radiation Medicine Program, provide direction towards new treatment techniques and/or technologies, and advise radiation oncologists and dosimetrists, as required. In addition, you will carry out key management-level duties, such as oversight of Medical Physics Department daily operations, employee evaluation and work assignment, project management, radiation capital equipment procurement, management of capital and operational budgets, professional and technical mentorship of staff, recruitment, and internal/external collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

This position offers eligibility for an adjunct faculty appointment through the Department of Physics at Brock University for teaching and research related to novel methods of cancer diagnosis and/or therapy. In the future, the Head of Medical Physics will help coordinate an academic relationship with McMaster University through their CAMPEP-accredited graduate-level and residency programs.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

As the successful applicant, you will join a rapidly growing radiation treatment program, and play a significant role in the transformation of the program over the next five years. More specifically:
• CT simulation has transitioned toward a state-of-the-art Canon Aquilion Exceed LB scanner;
• Treatment planning will evolve from the Philips Pinnacle to the RaySearch RayStation platform;
• MOSAIQ oncology information system has recently transitioned and implemented locally;
• Three Elekta Synergy/Agility linear accelerators will all be replaced with advanced radiation delivery systems capable of SRS/SBRT/VMAT/IGRT/SGRT. The first linear accelerator replacement is scheduled to be with the Varian Edge stereotactic platform;
• AI-based contouring is available using Limbus AI software modelling;
• Motion management is performed through the C-RAD Sentinel 4DCT and Catalyst HD systems;
• DICOM manipulation / PACS storage is managed using the MIMVista platform;
• Ultimaker S5 3D printer bundle is available for custom RT applications.

As Head of Medical Physics, you will play an important role in directing the implementation of the new treatment planning system and guiding the pending linear accelerator replacements.

The Medical Physics Department at the WFCC currently consists of a team of four medical physicists (expanding to five), two physics associates, a physics systems administrator, an oncology application specialist, and a dedicated biomedical technologist. To join our team as Head of Medical Physics within our Medical Physics Department, you must be a highly knowledgeable professional combining experience in clinical medical physics with staff management in a multi-union setting, and have a
knowledge base and skill set that include:

• Ph.D. in Medical Physics or a similar field.
• Canadian College of Physics in Medicine (CCPM) or American Board of Radiology (ABR) equivalent certification.
• Possession of CCPM fellowship certification, preferred.
• A minimum of 10 years of clinical medical physics experience, and five years in a leadership role.
• Experience managing staff in a multi-unionized environment.
• Demonstrated clinical excellence and problem-solving skills, and proficiency in scientific/technical writing.
• Knowledge and experience in a wide range of clinical therapeutic medical physics, such as radiation equipment acceptance testing, commissioning, and quality assurance, treatment planning, and clinical and technical protocol development radiation equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to provide an environment for Medical Physics research and development.
• Willingness to gain knowledge of relevant Niagara Heath policies and procedures, and collective agreements.
• Mentorship experience in people management, and strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain consistent, regular attendance.

ASSETS:
• Experience in change management, project management, and process improvement.
• Proficiency in both official languages (English and French).
