The Medical Physics Department in the Odette Cancer Centre (OCC) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario, has an opening for a full time, permanent Senior Medical Physicist - Radiation Safety Officer. The OCC is an academic comprehensive cancer centre whose Radiation Treatment Program (RTP) serves over 7500 new patients per year through its external beam (Varian and Elekta linacs, MR-linac, Gamma Knife, orthovoltage) and brachytherapy (700 patients per year) programs. The OCC is home to some of the most advanced radiation therapy technologies. The Department has twenty-four qualified medical physicists in its staff of forty-five.
The Senior Medical Physicist – RSO is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of personnel, the public, and the environment for the activities in the in the Radiation Treatment Program, regulated under a Class II CNSC license and the provincial radiation protection regulations. The Senior Medical Physicist – RSO is critical to operational integrity and fosters a culture of safety and quality.
The Senior Medical Physicist – RSO holds many of the responsibilities identified in CNSC REGDOC -2.2.3, Personnel Certification: Radiation Safety Officers. These include oversight of the daily aspects of the radiation safety program in the OCC; acting as the primary contact with the CNSC for licensing and compliance matters; identifying radiation safety problems; implementing corrective actions; ensuring compliance with the CNSC regulatory requirements; reporting regulatory non-compliances to the CNSC; holding the authority to stop any activity related to the operation of a Class II Facility or servicing of Class II Prescribed Equipment that might result in noncompliance; developing procedures and policies related to radiation safety and training; and, acting as the signing authority for CNSC licenses.
Senior Medical Physicists also undertake core clinical medical physics activities (commissioning devices and software for radiotherapy, developing technical and clinical protocols, contributing to the quality program, reviewing treatment plans, and consulting on clinical care). Senior Medical Physicists provide leadership in clinical, educational, and research activities, and lead transformative change through the implementation of new technology and the improvement of clinical processes and program-wide initiatives.
The Department employs a Radiation Safety Specialist to work with the RSO. The Senior Medical Physicist - RSO reports to the Head of the Department of Medical Physics.
