Health care is the largest growing industry in our region. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is a recognized leader in Northwestern Ontario in the provision of acute and some specialized care. Regional Cancer Care Northwest (RCCNW) is the comprehensive cancer treatment center of the TBRHSC, one of the major programs of the TBRHSC, and one of the 13 regional programs under the umbrella of the provincial agency Ontario Health - Cancer Care Ontario (OH-CCO). A program management model is used, providing client and family centred services with an emphasis on inter-professional collaboration and evidence-based practice.

POSITION SUMMARY:
TBRHSC is inviting applications for a full-time permanent position for a Medical Physicist. The radiation program at RCCNW has three linear accelerators (Elekta Versa HD) and a high dose rate brachytherapy (HDRB) unit (Elekta Flexitron). Two linacs were recently replaced and installation of a third new unit is underway. Planning equipment includes a wide-bore Somatom CT simulator (Siemens) and a Biograph Vision 450 PET-CT (Siemens). Simulation is performed using MonacoSim (Elekta) and Monaco (Elekta) is the principal planning system. The HDRB planning system is Oncentra (Elekta). The medical physics department is comprised of 4 physicists, 2 physics assistants, and a machinist. With this complement, the department maintains an academic profile with Lakehead University and supports a CAMPEP accredited medical physics residency program under the auspices of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSMU) in partnership with the radiation treatment program of Health Sciences North in Sudbury, the centre providing cancer care in Northeastern Ontario.

The focus of this position is medical physics as applied to radiation oncology. The successful candidate will be assigned clinical duties that may include: acceptance and commissioning of equipment, quality assurance, treatment plan and chart checking, clinical physics support for both external beam and brachytherapy procedures, consultation with treatment planners and radiation oncologists, physics support for new technique and protocol development, and education of other staff, residents, and students. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in medical physics and radiation oncology oriented research, seek an academic appointment at Lakehead University and/or the NOSMU, and actively support the residency program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have a graduated degree in medical physics (PhD preferred), professional certification (Membership in the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine, or equivalent), and a preferred minimum of two years of work experience as a qualified medical physicist. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Experience in academics and/or research is considered an asset.
