Fundamentals of spectral photon-counting CT

Spectral photon-counting CT (SPCCT) is a rapidly developing X-ray modality that allows CT systems to count photons in discrete energy bins rather than integrating the signal over all photon energies. Prototype systems promise improved image quality and tissue quantification, reduced dose and open the possibility of multi-contrast imaging.

In this lecture, the fundamentals of SPCCT will be covered, from detectors to material decomposition methods, focusing on how the technology allows improved image quality and tissue quantification. The current state of the technology towards clinical adoption will be discussed.

Examples of research work conducted with a Medipix All-Resolution System (MARS) SPCCT at the University of Montreal will be reported, with a focus towards potential applications in radiotherapy. Research from other groups focused on radiological applications will also be summarized.
