Pieces of Interest from COMP for the week of October 28

IDMP2024/2025 COMP Winter School Keynote/Montreal General strengthens nuclear medicine/McMaster joins Canadians for CANDU campaign in support of made-in-Canada nuclear technology

  • The International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) is approaching on November 7th, and we want to celebrate with the COMP community through a photo contest! The theme of IDMP this year is “Inspiring the Next Generation of Medical Physicists.”  We would like to see your interpretation through a photo and accompanying caption. Some ideas include (but are not limited to!):

    • A photo highlighting the importance of mentorship or a mentorship opportunity you appreciated.
    • A photo honouring a mentor, mentee or community.
    • A photo showing the next generation of medical physicists in action!
    • A photo showing the daily tasks and challenges of medical physics that may inspire young physicists to join us in our field.

Submit your entry post to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #COMPIDMP2024 or email the photo and caption to sarah@comp-ocpm.ca.  Twitter submitters please tag @MedphysCA.  Creativity welcome!

The lucky winning entry, selected by the COMP Communications Committee, will receive $250 in Curie cash, which one can use towards COMP membership or conference fees.

  • Get ready for a thought-provoking keynote at the 2025 COMP Winter School! Dr. Rachel Ellaway will deliver the keynote presentation "Changing and Unchanging Medical Education", taking attendees on a journey through the evolving landscape of medical education.

Dr. Ellaway will dive into the paradox at the heart of modern medical education: while we champion constant innovation—from problem-based learning and OSCEs to digital technology and competency-based models—we remain rooted in time-honored methods, like apprenticeships and high-stakes exams. Why do we relentlessly pursue change while resisting it at the same time?

  • The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) announces the opening of its newly renovated Nuclear Medicine unit at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH), equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic technology.

  • McMaster University has joined a national campaign as an ambassador for Canadians for CANDU, which promotes the adoption of Canada’s only domestically developed and licensed nuclear technology to generate emission-free energy. Read more here
