Position Profile:
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario invites applications for a new member of faculty specializing in computational medical physics; research foci of interest include but are not limited to theranostics, artificial intelligence for medical imaging and image-guided therapy, quantitative and multimodal imaging, radiobiological modeling, computational radiation oncology and treatment optimization, and biophysical modeling and simulation for precision medicine. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time probationary tenure-track at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be primarily appointed to the Department of Medical Biophysics, with an additional appointment in the Department of Oncology, within the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The candidate’s research laboratory will be situated within the Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research (“Baines Centre”) at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre, at London Health Sciences Centre Victoria Hospital. The Baines Centre includes over 11,000 square feet dedicated to translational cancer research, with space dedicated to imaging and radiochemistry research, a clinical trials unit, and dedicated treatment space for patients on complex trials. The Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre comprises 20 clinical medical physicists, and 21 radiation oncologists, with eight linear accelerators, one Varian Ethos adaptive radiotherapy system, one Accuray TomoTherapy system, two CT simulators, one MRI simulator, and HDR and LDR brachytherapy programs. It serves a population of 1.25 million, with 56,000 patient visits annually, providing the incumbent with ample infrastructure, patient population, and collaboration opportunities to support a vibrant research program.

Academic Expectations:
The successful candidate will be expected to lead an independent, competitive research program in computational medical physics that will attract excellent trainees, strong external research support, and develop extensive collaborative partnerships across the University and affiliated hospital partners and their respective research institutes. The position provides excellent opportunities to expand established collaborations in basic science and clinical departments including (among others) Oncology, Medical Imaging, Medical Biophysics, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering. The incumbent’s teaching will support Western University’s well-respected CAMPEP MSc and PhD programs, which have outstanding success rates in securing competitive residency placements for graduates.

Qualifications or Experience and Skills Required:
The applicant must have fluent written and oral communication skills in English and hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field; e.g. medical physics, biophysics, biomedical engineering. While this is a research-intensive position, the successful applicant should demonstrate enthusiasm for excellence in education as contributions to graduate and undergraduate education, particularly in medical physics, are valued. The successful candidate will demonstrate a knowledge of the importance of EDID principles in research, teaching and/or mentorship. Evidence of research leadership potential will be beneficial.
Compensation Details: The annual salary for this will be $120,000 - $140,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Department: The Department of Medical Biophysics website describes the broader department’s collaborative research-intensive environment involving over 100 graduate students from the University and its affiliated research institutes and hospitals across the city of London. The successful applicant may have opportunities for additional appointments in relevant basic science, clinical, population science, and engineering departments, as appropriate.
