Young Professionals: Panel Discussion - Career Paths in Medical Physics
Emily Heath Carleton University
Dr. Emily Heath is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Carleton University. She obtained her MSc and PhD in Medical Physics from McGill University. She then held a post-doctoral fellowship at the German Cancer Research Center (DFKZ) in Heidelberg, Germany, from 2007-2009 before moving to a faculty position in the Department of Medical Physics at Ryerson University in Toronto. In 2014 she moved to Carleton University where her current position involves teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as conducting research. Her main research interest is modeling and compensating for anatomical changes during radiation therapy by way of Monte Carlo simulation and novel treatment planning methods.
Bryan Muir National Research Council Canada
Graeme Wardlaw Health Canada
Graduated with Ph.D. in Medical Physics from McMaster University in 2010 with a focus on Fractal Dimension Mapping of Microvasculature using clinical BOLD MRI data; however, since early 2009 has been working for Health Canada’s Consumer & Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau (CCRPB) supporting the administration of Radiation Emitting Device regulations and leading or collaborating on a variety of x-ray based radiation dosimetry, digital image quality and testing methodology research projects. His most recent (and largest) project was Canada’s first national survey of computed tomography (CT) machines in Canada, in order to propose national CT diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) – the 122 page report was published in June 2016 and provides dose index and patient examination information collected from approximately 75% of CT units across 12 of 13 provinces and territories.
He is a member of the COMP Imaging Committee, a member of maintenance teams for the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) for both, Computed Tomography (MT 30) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MT 40). He has also served/is serving as an expert member on a number of ad-hoc committees related to staff hiring, and scientific IT support.
Graeme enjoys running and cycling – and is currently training for his first marathon.
Joanna Cygler The Ottawa Hospital
Dr. Joanna Cygler was born and educated in Poland. Currently she is employed as a Senior Medical Physicist at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, specializing in radiation therapy. Dr. Cygler also holds academic appointments as a Professor at the Department of Radiology, University of Ottawa and as an Adjunct Research Professor, Department of Physics, Carleton University.
She is a Fellow of Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine and a Fellow of American Association of Physicists in Medicine. She has been a member of several Task Groups on subjects such as Quality Assurance of Treatment Planning Systems, Clinical Implementation of Monte Carlo Treatment Planning and Luminescence Dosimetry.
She has authored over 60 peer reviewed scientific papers, over 160 conference abstracts, 7 book chapters, as well as co-edited an 1100 page book on Clinical Dosimetry Measurements in Radiotherapy related to the AAPM Summer School she co-directed in 2009.
Dr. Cygler is also a co-inventor on 2 US patents and a consultant to International Atomic Energy Agency on in-vivo dosimetry.

Young Professionals: Transition from residency to staff role and clinical project case study
Elsayed Ali The Ottawa Hospital
Justin Sutherland The Ottawa Hospital
Dr. Justin Sutherland is a clinical medical physicist at the Ottawa Hospital. He obtained his MSc in Medical Physics from McGill University and his PhD in Medical Physics from Carleton University. Following his PhD, he did a clinical residency in radiation oncology physics at The Ottawa Hospital – subsequently becoming a member of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine and joining The Ottawa Hospital as a staff physicist. He currently works full time at The Ottawa Hospital while also acting, once a week, as a medical physics consultant for the Alice Hyde Medical Center: a small clinic in New York State.
Apart from clinical duties, Justin currently pursues research in developing and applying novel virtual reality and tracking technologies in medicine, both with the department of radiology and the radiation medicine program. These efforts have lead to his founding and leading realizeLAB (www.tohmedphys.ca/realizeLAB), a research initiative from the Division of Medical Physics of the University of Ottawa Department of Radiology.

Young Professionals: Interview Skills
Session Description
This workshop is designed for job hunters to learn and apply the tactics, techniques, and etiquette necessary for a successful interview. In today's competitive job market, a candidate’s success relies most heavily upon networking and interview skills.
Unfortunately, interviewing skills are often given scant discussion in the job search process. Many candidates are at a disadvantage because they lack networking and interviewing skills, or have learned them by trial and error. The workshop will discuss basic networking rules and strategies, how to prepare for an interview, how to structure your responses and prepare answers to key interview questions, and how to use storytelling to your advantage.
By attending this applied workshop, you'll gain confidence and learn how to maximize your ability to network and convert a job interview into a job offer.

Meeting of the QATrack+ Community
All users and developers of QATrack+ are invited to attend our first Community Meeting to be held at the COMP ASM on Friday July 14th from 2-3pm in the Provinces I room. Our goal is to facilitate a highly interactive group discussion so that we may learn how QATrack+ is being used (and further developed) across Canada.
Members of the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Center QATrack+ team will demonstrate the recently developed service log functionality and will seek feedback from the community in terms of facilitating implementation and use in other centers. We look forward to meeting and interacting with the growing QATrack+ community!
